Integrating Node-RED and Home Assistant for Comprehensive Smart Home Solutions: A Practical Exploration and Prototype Construction

In this master's dissertation, we aim to investigate the potential of open-source platforms Node-RED and Home Assistant in developing a comprehensive smart home system prototype. This project stands at the intersection of software engineering, user experience design, and sustainability. It seeks to design an intelligent and interactive smart home model that enhances everyday living, reduces environmental impact, and can be controlled remotely.

The smart home system will be built using Home Assistant, an open-source platform renowned for its broad device support and customizability, running on a Raspberry Pi. Node-RED, a flow-based programming tool, will be employed to develop complex automation sequences, acting as a bridge between various devices, services, and APIs. This combination allows us to create a smart home environment that is not just automated, but truly intelligent and adaptable.
